    The propensity of molecules to spatially align in intense light fields

    The propensity of molecules to spatially align along the polarization vector of intense, pulsed light fields is related to readily-accessible parameters (molecular polarizabilities, moment of inertia, peak intensity of the light and its pulse duration). Predictions can now be made of which molecules can be spatially aligned, and under what circumstances, upon irradiation by intense light. Accounting for both enhanced ionization and hyperpolarizability, it is shown that {\it all} molecules can be aligned, even those with the smallest static polarizability, when subjected to the shortest available laser pulses (of sufficient intensity).Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to be submitted to PR

    Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay Bundles on complete intersection varieties of sufficiently high multidegree

    Recently it has been proved that any arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundle of rank two on a general, smooth hypersurface of degree at least three and dimension at least four is a sum of line bundles. When the dimension of the hypersurface is three, a similar result is true provided the degree of the hypersurface is at least six. We extend these results to complete intersection subvarieties by proving that any ACM bundle of rank two on a general, smooth complete intersection subvariety of sufficiently high multi-degree and dimension at least four splits. We also obtain partial results in the case of threefolds.Comment: 15 page

    PERFORMANCE STUDIES OF CUSTOM CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION FOR ALLTERRAIN VEHICLE APPLICATIONS

    The off-road vehicles are a necessary in today’s world for rescuing operations, military, racing and farming applications creating a huge demand for the AllTerrain Vehicle in the automobile market. The market size is estimated to be worth about $ 9.2bn (₹594Cr) by 2020. The drive-train of an All-Terrain Vehicle(ATV) is one of the major component in propelling the vehicle. Continuously Variable Transmission(CVT) coupled to a constant reduction gearbox, provides ease of driveability and the required high torque and top speed. In case of an ATV, high torque and high-top speed is the requirement, since it should be able to negotiate various terrains such as bumps, hill-climb, etc. Several authors have discussed, methods in designing CVT components of commercial vehicles which run on tarmac, and only few researchers have discussed methods to develop a CVT for an ATV requiring high velocity and high torque. The aim is to develop a lightweight, compact CVT system with high torque and top speed without any compromise on reliability. The force balance method is used to develop the analytical model. This model is used to design the various components of the CVT operating with gear ratios between 4:1 to 0.7:1. The structural analysis of all the CVT components are carried out. The designed and fabricated CVT components were then assembled on the ATV and performance studies were done by testing in various terrain conditions such as bumps, drops, slush and pulling weight from zero speed. All the components performed well, with no failures in all these conditions

    The specialty choices of graduates from Brighton and Sussex Medical School: a longitudinal cohort study

    BACKGROUND Since 2007 junior doctors in the UK have had to make major career decisions at a point when previously many had not yet chosen a specialty. This study examined when doctors in this new system make specialty choices, which factors influence choices, and whether doctors who choose a specialty they were interested in at medical school are more confident in their choice than those doctors whose interests change post-graduation. METHODS Two cohorts of students in their penultimate year at one medical school (n = 227/239) were asked which specialty interested them as a career. Two years later, 210/227 were sent a questionnaire measuring actual specialty chosen, confidence, influence of perceptions of the specialty and experiences on choice, satisfaction with medicine, personality, self-efficacy, and demographics. Medical school and post-graduation choices in the same category were deemed 'stable'. Predictors of stability, and of not having chosen a specialty, were calculated using bootstrapped logistic regression. Differences between specialties on questionnaire factors were analysed. RESULTS 50% responded (n = 105/277; 44% of the 239 Year 4 students). 65% specialty choices were 'stable'. Factors univariately associated with stability were specialty chosen, having enjoyed the specialty at medical school or since starting work, having first considered the specialty earlier. A regression found doctors who chose psychiatry were more likely to have changed choice than those who chose general practice. Confidence in the choice was not associated with stability. Those who chose general practice valued lifestyle factors. A psychiatry choice was associated with needing a job and using one's intellect to help others. The decision to choose surgical training tended to be made early. Not having applied for specialty training was associated with being lower on agreeableness and conscientiousness. CONCLUSION Medical school experiences are important in specialty choice but experiences post-graduation remain significant, particularly in some specialties (psychiatry in our sample). Career guidance is important at medical school and should be continued post-graduation, with senior clinicians supported in advising juniors. Careers advice in the first year post-graduation may be particularly important, especially for specialties which have difficulty recruiting or are poorly represented at medical school

    Symmetry breaking perturbations and strange attractors

    The asymmetrically forced, damped Duffing oscillator is introduced as a prototype model for analyzing the homoclinic tangle of symmetric dissipative systems with \textit{symmetry breaking} disturbances. Even a slight fixed asymmetry in the perturbation may cause a substantial change in the asymptotic behavior of the system, e.g. transitions from two sided to one sided strange attractors as the other parameters are varied. Moreover, slight asymmetries may cause substantial asymmetries in the relative size of the basins of attraction of the unforced nearly symmetric attracting regions. These changes seems to be associated with homoclinic bifurcations. Numerical evidence indicates that \textit{strange attractors} appear near curves corresponding to specific secondary homoclinic bifurcations.     Optical absorption in boron clusters B6_{6} and B6+_{6}^{+} : A first principles configuration interaction approach

    The linear optical absorption spectra in neutral boron cluster B6_{6} and cationic B6+_{6}^{+} are calculated using a first principles correlated electron approach. The geometries of several low-lying isomers of these clusters were optimized at the coupled-cluster singles doubles (CCSD) level of theory. With these optimized ground-state geometries, excited states of different isomers were computed using the singles configuration-interaction (SCI) approach. The many body wavefunctions of various excited states have been analysed and the nature of optical excitation involved are found to be of collective, plasmonic type.Comment: 22 pages, 38 figures.     An (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-partition of a graph G is a partition of its vertex set into r independent sets and ℓℓ cliques. A graph is (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ) if it admits an (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-partition. A graph is well-covered if every maximal independent set is also maximum. A graph is (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-well-covered if it is both (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ) and well-covered. In this paper we consider two different decision problems. In the (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-Well-Covered Graph problem ((r,ℓ)(r,ℓ) wcg for short), we are given a graph G, and the question is whether G is an (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-well-covered graph. In the Well-Covered (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-Graph problem (wc (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ) g for short), we are given an (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-graph G together with an (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-partition of V(G) into r independent sets and ℓℓ cliques, and the question is whether G is well-covered. We classify most of these problems into P, coNP-complete, NP-complete, NP-hard, or coNP-hard. Only the cases wc(r, 0)g for r≥3r≥3 remain open. In addition, we consider the parameterized complexity of these problems for several choices of parameters, such as the size αα of a maximum independent set of the input graph, its neighborhood diversity, or the number ℓℓ of cliques in an (r,ℓ)(r,ℓ)-partition. In particular, we show that the parameterized problem of deciding whether a general graph is well-covered parameterized by αα can be reduced to the wc (0,ℓ)(0,ℓ) g problem parameterized by ℓℓ, and we prove that this latter problem is in XP but does not admit polynomial kernels unless coNP⊆NP/polycoNP⊆NP/poly

    TRAIP is a master regulator of DNA interstrand crosslink repair

    Cells often use multiple pathways to repair the same DNA lesion, and the choice of pathway has substantial implications for the fidelity of genome maintenance. DNA interstrand crosslinks covalently link the two strands of DNA, and thereby block replication and transcription; the cytotoxicity of these crosslinks is exploited for chemotherapy. In Xenopus egg extracts, the collision of replication forks with interstrand crosslinks initiates two distinct repair pathways. NEIL3 glycosylase can cleave the crosslink; however, if this fails, Fanconi anaemia proteins incise the phosphodiester backbone that surrounds the interstrand crosslink, generating a double-strand-break intermediate that is repaired by homologous recombination. It is not known how the simpler NEIL3 pathway is prioritized over the Fanconi anaemia pathway, which can cause genomic rearrangements. Here we show that the E3 ubiquitin ligase TRAIP is required for both pathways. When two replisomes converge at an interstrand crosslink, TRAIP ubiquitylates the replicative DNA helicase CMG (the complex of CDC45, MCM2–7 and GINS). Short ubiquitin chains recruit NEIL3 through direct binding, whereas longer chains are required for the unloading of CMG by the p97 ATPase, which enables the Fanconi anaemia pathway. Thus, TRAIP controls the choice between the two known pathways of replication-coupled interstrand-crosslink repair. These results, together with our other recent findings establish TRAIP as a master regulator of CMG unloading and the response of the replisome to obstacles

    Compressibility of the high-pressure rocksalt phase of ZnO

    We report the results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation on the stability and the volume behavior under hydrostatic pressure of the rocksalt (B1) phase of ZnO. Synchrotron-radiation x-ray powder-diffraction data are obtained from 0 to 30 GPa. Static simulations of the ZnOB1 phase are performed using the ab initio perturbed ion method and the local and nonlocal approximations to the density-functional theory. After the pressure induced transition from the wurtzite phase, we have found that a large fraction of the B1 high-pressure phase is retained when pressure is released. The metastability of this ZnO polymorph is confirmed through the theoretical evaluation of the Hessian eigenvalues of a nine-parameter potential energy surface. This allows us to treat the experimental and theoretical pressure-volume data on an equal basis. In both cases, we have obtained values of the bulk modulus in the range of 160–194 GPa. For its zero-pressure first derivative, the experimental and theoretical data yield a value of 4.4±1.0. Overall, our results show that the ZnOB1 phase is slightly more compressible than previously reported
